For years, the mountains in North Nepal have been known as the hunting ground for a type of high altitude fungus, known as yarshagumba. Also known as the "Himalayan Viagra", this fungus is believed to enhance sexual prowess like Viagra tablets and is said to be highly prized by the Chinese.
Though Viagra is officially banned in Nepal, the drug finds its way into the country via India and is sold at very high prices in the black market.
This year however three pharmaceutical companies are in the process of making versions of the Himalayan Viagra used for erectile dysfunction.
The three companies - Quest Pharmaceuticals, Arya Pharma and Alive Pharmaceuticals - have been given permission by Nepals Department of Drug Administration (DDA) to manufacture and market the "Nepali Viagra".
At present however, the Maoist government is continuing a vice crack down on massage parlours and cabin restaurants and regulating the sale of tobacco and alcohol and so cannot be seen to be condoning the sale of what some have described as a sex drug.

The "Nepali Viagra" will therefore not be marketed as such. According to DDA chief, Radha Raman Prasad, the government agreed to the manufacture of the Nepali drug following requests from one of Nepals oldest heart hospitals, the Gangalal Heart Center.
He went on to say that the Nepali drugs are made and meant to treat heart problems like pulmonary hypertension.
